Build your brand using social currency

I talk a lot about this on clubhouse (follow me @somebi ๐Ÿ˜‰) and get a lot of questions off-line about what it is, how to get started and if there's any point to 'brand building' as a young person. So let's dive in!

Having a social presence (i.e. social currency) basically just means being online. You have to ask yourself: when a prospective manager, client, even a potential partner googles your name, what comes up? Is it page after page of you fighting with internet strangers or is it you adding value using your skills & sharing hobbies.

And yes I know the term 'adding value' gets thrown around a lot (๐Ÿ™„) but in this content it literally just means you being you (!!), being authentic and showing up:

๐Ÿ”Ž Posting on LinkedIn about that topic you're super interested (could be tech, D&I, entrepreneurship)

๐Ÿ”Ž OR creating a blog to post about those things that interest you (๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ)

๐Ÿ”Ž Making a YouTube channel, IGTV or a social media page

๐Ÿ”Ž Commenting on other people's content to show support, learn something new and show off that you're interested in whatever they are talking about

๐Ÿ”Ž i.e. I'm super interested in AI and tend to follow and networking with people in that field and also comment on their posts on LinkedIn!

P.S. You do not have you limit yourself to only posting about things you're an 'expert' at. Literally just posting about what interests you, what you're learning at the moment and the journey you're on is perfect!!

Sharing more about your story, your struggles and what you've learned, your ups and your downs - the world if truly your oyster!!

You gave a talk at school? Talk about it! You went to a seminar? Share what you learned! You have a cool idea about how something can be improved or worked on? Open it up for discussion.

Control of your own story and frame your own narrative.

I have a theory that as millennials and Gen-Z get into these managerial and executive positions were going to see more of a push for non-traditional ways of hiring and looking for talent - more about this next week when we discuss 'social proof'!
